Rover asked why Apple decided to call it the new iPad instead of the iPad3. I thought it was pretty obvious. They want it to be inline with all their other products. The iPod is not called iPod3 or iPod4 is it? The new Macbook is not called the Macbook6 is it?
Basically, 15 years from now they do not want to release a product called iPad18. They will just call it the new iPad each time. The new iPad will now be referred to as the 3rd generation iPad. I am sure apple put a lot of thought into this. They are smart…obviously.
